I have picked up several good ideas on how to troubleshoot my speedometer problem. I just don't know where to start.

My Civic is a 5-speed with a heater and keys. No power locks or windows. No A/C. No cruise control. No CD or cassette.

I read that a blown fuse might be a problem. I'm not sure which fuse to check.

My speedometer jumps all over the place from zero to 120. The odometer is also not functioning properly.

I plan to check under the hood to see if a cable harness is rubbing against the manifold next.

Thanks,
Jason

I got the speedometer to work by replacing the Alternator/Speed sensor fuse last night. Unfortunately, the fuse blew again today. It seems to happen when I start the car. But, not every time I start the car.

Do you think the Alternator is blowing the fuse?

The check engine light is on. Do I need to take it to the shop to find out what is causing the light to come on?

I believe I have it fixed this time. A cable harness was rubbing against the intake manifold bracket. The cable had been worn to the point that bare wire was touching the steel bracket.

This is very difficult to see because it is under the manifold near the firewall. (It is very close to the oil filter) I had to reach down from the top with pieces of electrical tape to correct the problem.

I forgot to mention that I was able to clear the check engine light by removing the 7.5 amp BACKUP fuse for 10 seconds. That's enough time to clear the codes. That fuse is located in the fuse box under the hood.

Sounds like you have a weak signal generator for the speedometer. Replacing it should fix your problem.
