My 97 crv awd, with 210,000 miles makes this noise when I make a sharp turn. I am almost 100% sure that it is not the cv joints. The noise is coming from the rear wheels. It sounds as if the awd is trying to engage. The sound is very similar to a broken cv boot afterr time, but no broken boot. Any insight? Thanks Ben

Sound like a problem I had with my 2002 CRV. A grumble from the rear when the stearing turned to full lock on either side. Took it to the dealer expecting a big bill, but they only had to replace the oil in the rear diff.
Apparently AWD is engaged on full lock turns on CRV and there is a known issue with some grades of differential oil that Honda have used. The oil can break down and needs replaced.

Guys,
You were both DEAD ON. I changed the rear differential fluid and the noise has 100% gone away. I never thought there would be such a simple solution. Thanks for the help!!!
