We have on 05' Honda Accord but we still also love our 93. Unfortunately we are not mechanics. Our Honda has been overheating to the point that the temp gauge goes all the way to the H. We immediately turn it off and let it cool off. Sometimes it will crank back up and everything is fine , then other times it won't crank at all. What could be wrong? We tried a new temp. gauge but that was not it.

Your problem is most likely your thermostat is fried its allows the coolant to enter the motor and cool it down when the engine is to hot. try changing that and let me know what happens.

Thanks for replying. The first thing we tried was changing the thermostat. The other thermostat was definitely fired but the new one fried the first day as well, and now it is back to not even cranking at all (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) .

How long did it take for things to overheat?

If it took a little while or was worse when in traffic you may have lost either the electric motor for the cooling fan or the sensor (usually in the radiator) that controls it. When these sensors fair the fan will not wor. A mechanic can run several tests to check out these items.

When the engine fails to start does it make any sound at all? (clicking, grinding, tries to turn the engine over)

You said the second thermostat was fried? Was it checked out or are you just saying that the overheating is still a problem? (The only real way I know to check a thermostat for function is to put it in some water and heat it up to see if it opens at the appropriate temperature unless there is something obviously amiss such as parts falling out of it.)

Continued overheating risks damage to the head and/or head gasket which can cause many problems and can be expensive to repair.

Is your mechanic used to working on Honda? If not, find someone who is before this gets any worse than it already is.

Good luck.

It didn't take too long to overheat at all. I would say maybe 20 minutes of driving and this was in residential areas. As far as the temp gauge, we replaced because we were told that is was not good anymore.

I am beginning to think its the head gasket. I guess the best thing to do would be to find a good mechanic that knows Hondas well as you suggested. I just don't know if it would be worth it to even repair if it does happen to be the gasket.

Did the fan cut in? In 20 minutes it should have come on.

When it fails to start try to pay attention to whether it makes any sounds. It may help the mechanic in diagnosing the problem.

Let us know what you find out.

Thanks for all the replies. Well we have found a mechanic and will be finding out after Thanksgiving. I listed all the advice here in hopes that may be of some help. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks again.
