My 90 Accord is having problems with the brake lights. They stay on all the time. All 3 lights are on when I am driving and when the lights are off and the key is not in the ignition. I have to pull a battery cable so not run down the battery. Is this simple to fix or should I take it in somewhere. Any help or info would be apprecdiated.

I don't know the answer to this but went hunting around on google for a possible answer for you. I don't know if the 1990 and 1992 Honda Accord are close to identical or not but I found someone asking about the same problem but with there 1992 Accord.

" it would most likely be a bad or maladjusted stop light switch located on the brake pedal assembly "

That's really all I could find.... sorry if that's really no help at all. Perhaps call the nearest Honda dealer near you and ask them or call a autoparts dealer that you go through or know whom are reliable and honest and could tell you the problem? or ask your mechanic.. if you have one.

Best of luck.

I'm having similar troubles with my brakes as of recent, chb7734. Near exact even. Same car, same problem. Only I didn't disconnect my cables. Something you should check is the brake light switch located in front of the break pedal. Easiest way to find it is to follow the break pedal's arm up while pressing the pedal down. You should feel two things: a button and a small rubber spike of a sort. The button is the brake light switch, and the spike is what turns off the brakes when you stop pressing the pedal.

Now that's best case scenario of course, but they're easy-ish to fix. If you don't feel a piece of rubber, then just find a sturdy, small piece and put it in place with epoxy or glue or something. I found this was what was wrong with my breaks, though right now I'm trying to see if people sell it separately from the pedal. If that's not it, check your switch, and if not, good luck with your electrical.

I am having the same problem. I will paste a detailed description below of whats going on and what I've done so far.

"I have a 1999 honda civic ex. I bought it with a viper alarm with remote start. I don't know the model number. About 2 weeks ago during a thunder and lightning storm I notice that my remote start would not work amd the brake lights were stuck on. I have already ruled out the brake switch and a open circuit by a master auto tech certified in electronics. When I remove the interior light fuse the brake lights go off and the remote start works. When I replace the fuse the brake lights turn on then the remote start does not work. Also when the fuse is out the remote start works, but I cannot get the car out of park to drive. When I put the fuse back I can get the automatic handle out park and drive it. Please help!!!!"

Remove the 7.5 amp fuse t save your battery. Also are you able to shift out of park after you remove the 7.5 amp fuse from beneath the hood next to the battery? If you are standing on the passenger side tire it is the 2nd fuse to the right from the bottom left hand corner. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/w00t.gif)

Honda sells the brake stop pad. Just bought one this afternoon for $2.00. I am having a problem adjusting the switch out. A friend was working on it and had adjusted the switch forward not knowing that the pad was gone. When he found out the pad was missing he told me to get one and just put it on. Seemed easy enough. I am trying to adjust the switch back out but can't figure out how to loosen the switch. I have the nut on the backside of the switch loosened but there is another inside of the bracket that holds the switch in place that I haven't been able to loosen. Any one have any ideas?

I was having similar problems with my 1990 civic. I found the fix....at least for the civic and since the two vehicles use similar parts it may help. There is a headlight relay switch in the upper left side of the glove compartment area. In the civic it was held in place by one small screw. Once removed the relay comes apart easily. Have a close look inside at the soldered areas....mine had a hairline crack on one of the larger contacts probably caused from vibration. I carefully re-soldered the crack and put the part back in and solved all the electrical problems I was having with the brake lights and headlights. The dealer wanted $90.00 for the relay...your choice. Cheers
