First we really have to wonder if this was caused by something you did while changing the alterntor or something that was just going to happen any way.

Ok... so it wont idle..... Does it just die when you take your foot off the gas or does it seem like it has a severe miss? Slowly push the pedal down and if it seems like its loping at any speed I would look for a wire that fell off. If it revs up smoothly I would be thinking that a jet has become fouled and try a can of gumout in the tank.... grab your favorite mag and sit there and make it run with a high idle for an hour or 2. any Cel lights?

Take the time to check and clean your carburetor too. It might help.
